Unpacking the 2023 Top 250 MSSPs Report

Image
Recently, MSSP Alert published its yearly report on the  Top 250 MSSPs . The report is chock-full of interesting information from a survey of MSSPs that makes it a worthwhile read. Below are a few key takeaways that anyone working with an  MSSP , looking to become an  MSSP , or an MSP seeking out an  MSSP partner  might find helpful.  Being an MSSP Can Be a Profitable Business Anyone who has started a business knows that the ultimate goal is to become profitable, which is easier said than done. While the  MSSPs  listed in this year’s report undoubtedly put in extremely long hours regularly, the fruits of their efforts are extraordinary. Over 80% of those who participated in the survey report that their business is profitable. If you were to survey other industries, you would be hard-pressed to find one where 8 out of 10 participants were profitable.  The question is, how are they doing it? Anecdotal from my experience working with thos...

Progressive Resilience In Cybersecurity Risk Management

Image
University environments are naturally open, so  cybersecurity risk  is an ongoing concern. Trying to lock down the network as you would with a business enterprise isn’t in the cards. Still, it’s tempting in an environment where individual departments, professors, or students introduce their own new technologies, devices, or applications into the network. Rather than trying to shut down new trends, changing behavior, or banning new devices and communication paradigms, our IT department adopted a strategy of progressive resilience.  Progressive resilience  means adapting to, rather than banning, behavioral and technical changes.  How did we adopt this strategy?  By recognizing that our cyber-risk management infrastructure needed to become more flexible. To make the necessary changes, we needed management support, a solid cybersecurity platform, and the funding to make it happen. Getting Buy-In From Stakeholders Any effort to reorient IT must be driven ...

Clearing up the XDR Confusion…Finally.

Image
This week Gartner weighed in on a technology that unfortunately became a dreaded three-letter word over the past couple of years,  XDR , by issuing its official  Market Guide . In the guide, Gartner describes what an  XDR consists  of and discusses how organizations should view this technology in context with everything else they currently use or might use in the future. You can download your complimentary copy of the guide  here  to get into all the details, but in the meantime, here are a few key takeaways from my perspective. XDR Must-Haves If you have followed the XDR soap opera, you know there are warring factions regarding the foundation of  XDR . The  Endpointers  see  XDR  as an evolution of  EDR  with a firm belief that an XDR must have an embedded EDR as its foundation. The  Networkers  take a “network-first’ stance claiming  XDR  must begin with network visibility. Yet another faction,...

Four Reasons MSPs and Resellers Need to Offer Cybersecurity Services NOW

Image
With every breach and data leak splashed across your favorite news website or X feed, your customers’ concern about being the next victim of a cyberattack increases. Whether you are a reseller or a  managed service provider  (MSP), your customers know that the blame and fallout will land on their desks if they experience a business disruption due to a cyberattack. So, it should be no surprise that more organizations are looking to develop relationships with resellers and MSPs that can offer cybersecurity services and provide for their IT needs. Understandably, MSPs and resellers who do not have embedded cybersecurity expertise and tools may think there is no way they can immediately spin up managed cybersecurity offerings, but fortunate for them, there is a category of  Managed Security Service Providers (MSSPs)  that cater specifically to  MSPs and resellers . They are known as Master MSSPs. Master MSSPs have all the tools and expertise in-house to offer...
